Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know ,) how that hath over a man as long as he liveth? For the woman which hath an husband is bound by to her husband so long as he liveth; but if the husband be , she is loosed from of her husband. So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be called an : but if her husband be , she is free from that law; so that she is no , though she be married to another man. Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become to by the ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is , that we should bring forth fruit unto . For when we were in , the motions of , which were by , did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto . But now we are from , that being wherein we were held; that we should in newness of , and not in the oldness of the letter. What shall we say then? Is ? forbid. Nay, I had not known , but by : for I had not known , except had said, Thou shalt not . But , taking occasion by the , wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without was . For I was alive without once: but when the came, revived, and I . And the , which was ordained to life, I found to be unto . For , taking occasion by the , deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore is , and the , and , and good. Was then that which is good made unto me? forbid. But , that it might appear , working in me by that which is good; that by the might become exceeding . For we know that is spiritual: but I am , sold under . For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my ,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in of after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against of my , and bringing me into to of which is in my members. The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.

Rome
The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
Judea
Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
The wider world
Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
Further afield
The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
