We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as , The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me. For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through and comfort of might have . Now the of and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ : That ye may with one and one , even of our . And again he saith, Rejoice, ye , with his people. And again, , all ye ; and laud him, all ye people. And again, saith, There shall be a root of , and he that shall rise to reign over the ; in him shall the . Now the of fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in , through the of the Ghost. And I myself also am persuaded of you, my brethren, that ye also are full of goodness, filled with all knowledge, able also to admonish one another. Nevertheless, brethren, I have written the more boldly unto you in some sort, as putting you in , because of the that is given to me of , That I should be the minister of to the , ministering of , that the up of the might be acceptable, being by the Ghost. I have therefore whereof I may through in those things which pertain to . For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the obedient, by word and deed, Through mighty signs and wonders, by the of of ; so that from , and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached of Christ. Yea, so have I strived to preach , not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man’s foundation: But as , To whom he was not spoken of, they shall see: and they that have not heard shall understand. For which cause also I have been much hindered from coming to you. Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
