And five of you shall chase an hundred, and an hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your shall fall before you . For I will have respect unto you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my with you. And ye shall eat old store, and bring forth the old because of the new. And I will set my among you: and shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you, and will be your , and ye shall be my people. I am your , which brought you forth out of the land of , that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your , and made you go upright. But if ye will not unto me, and will not do all these ; And if ye shall despise , or if your abhor my judgments, so that ye will not do all my , but that ye break my : I also will do this unto you; I will even appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning ague, that shall consume the eyes, and cause sorrow of : and ye shall sow in , for your shall eat it. And I will set against you, and ye shall be slain before your : they that hate you shall reign over you; and ye shall flee when none pursueth you. And if ye will not yet for all this unto me, then I will punish you seven times more for your . I will also send wild among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your high ways shall be desolate. The land also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her , while she lieth desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their : because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their abhorred . And yet for all that, when they be in the land of their , I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my with them: for I am their . The world at this moment · Egypt and Sinai, 1450 BC to 1200 BC

Israel in and then out of Egypt, at a period when Egypt was an imperial power that also controlled Canaan. The nation is formed as a people with a law before it has any land.

Egypt
The New Kingdom at its imperial peak, with a professional army, a chariot corps, and control reaching up through Canaan. Ramesses II reigns for sixty-six years and covers the country in monuments to himself. Egyptian power in this period is the reason Canaan is garrisoned rather than free.
The Hittites
The other superpower, in what is now Turkey, and Egypt's rival for the Levant. The two fight the largest chariot battle of the ancient world at Kadesh, then sign a treaty whose text survives from both sides. Hittite treaty form, with its historical prologue, stipulations, witnesses, blessings, and curses, is the shape the Sinai covenant takes, which is one of the stronger arguments for the antiquity of that material.
The Aegean
Mycenaean Greece: warrior kings in stone citadels at Mycenae and Pylos, keeping palace accounts in Linear B. The world of the Trojan War stories, whatever lies behind them.
Further afield
The Shang dynasty in China is casting extraordinary bronzes and writing questions to its ancestors on ox bones. In Mesoamerica the Olmec are beginning the first civilisation of the Americas.
