In thee, O , do I put my : let me never be put to confusion. me in thy , and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and me. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given to me; for thou art and my . me, O my , out of the hand of , out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou art my , O : thou art my from my youth. By thee have I been holden up from the : thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my shall be continually of thee. I am as a wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge. Let my be filled with thy and with thy all the day. Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth. For mine speak against me; and they that lay wait for take together, Saying, hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for there is none to him. O , be not far from me: O my , make haste for my help. Let them be confounded and consumed that are to ; let them be covered with and dishonour that seek my hurt. But I will continually, and will yet thee more and more. My shall shew forth thy and thy all the day; for I know not the numbers thereof. I will go in the strength of : I will make mention of thy , even of thine only. O , thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O , forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy to every one that is to come. Thy also, O , is very high, who hast done great things: O , who is like unto thee! Thou, which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth. Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side. I will also thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my : unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou One of Israel. My shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and , which thou hast . My also shall talk of thy all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto , that seek my hurt.

Saul, David, and Solomon. A rare window when both Egypt and Mesopotamia are weak, which is how a small kingdom in the corridor between them could briefly become a regional power.
- The power vacuum
- This is the whole political explanation for the united kingdom. Egypt is fragmented, Assyria is recovering but still local, the Hittites are gone, and nobody is in a position to object to a strong state in the corridor. It lasts about a century, and Israel's golden age fits exactly inside it.
- Phoenicia
- Tyre under Hiram is the commercial power of the coast, and supplies the cedar, the craftsmen, and the shipping for Solomon's building programme. The alliance is trade, not charity: Israel had grain and a land route, Tyre had timber and ships.
- Egypt
- Weak enough that a pharaoh gives a daughter in marriage to an Israelite king, which is the opposite of Egyptian practice in stronger centuries. Late in the era it recovers under a new house, and Shishak will invade within five years of Solomon's death.
- Further afield
- Greece is still in its dark age but beginning to recover, and will adopt the Phoenician alphabet within a century or two. Carthage is founded by settlers from Tyre by tradition in 814 BC. In the Americas the Olmec centre shifts to La Venta.
