To the upon Aijeleth Shahar, . My , my , why hast thou forsaken me? why art thou so far from helping me, and from the words of my roaring? O my , I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent. But thou art , O thou that inhabitest the of Israel. Our fathers trusted in thee: they trusted, and thou didst them. They cried unto thee, and were : they trusted in thee, and were not confounded. But I am a worm, and no man; a of men, and despised of the people. All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying, He trusted on that he would him: let him him, seeing he delighted in him. But thou art he that took me out of the : thou didst make me when I was upon my mother’s breasts. I was cast upon thee from the : thou art my from my mother’s belly. Be not far from me; for trouble is near; for there is none to help. Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of have beset me round. They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels. My strength is dried up like a potsherd; and my cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into of . For dogs have compassed me: of have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture. But be not thou far from me, O : O my strength, haste thee to help me. from ; my darling from the of the dog. me from the lion’s : for thou hast heard me from the of the unicorns. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of will I thee. Ye that , him; all ye the of , him; and fear him, all ye the of Israel. For he hath not despised nor abhorred the affliction of ; neither hath he hid from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard. My shall be of thee in the great : I will pay my before them that fear him. The meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall that seek him: shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto : and all the kindreds of the nations shall before thee. For is ’s: and he is the governor among the nations. All they that be fat upon earth shall eat and : all they that go down to shall bow before him: and none can keep alive his own . A shall him; it shall be accounted to for a generation. They shall come, and shall declare his unto a people that shall be born, that he hath done this.

Saul, David, and Solomon. A rare window when both Egypt and Mesopotamia are weak, which is how a small kingdom in the corridor between them could briefly become a regional power.
- The power vacuum
- This is the whole political explanation for the united kingdom. Egypt is fragmented, Assyria is recovering but still local, the Hittites are gone, and nobody is in a position to object to a strong state in the corridor. It lasts about a century, and Israel's golden age fits exactly inside it.
- Phoenicia
- Tyre under Hiram is the commercial power of the coast, and supplies the cedar, the craftsmen, and the shipping for Solomon's building programme. The alliance is trade, not charity: Israel had grain and a land route, Tyre had timber and ships.
- Egypt
- Weak enough that a pharaoh gives a daughter in marriage to an Israelite king, which is the opposite of Egyptian practice in stronger centuries. Late in the era it recovers under a new house, and Shishak will invade within five years of Solomon's death.
- Further afield
- Greece is still in its dark age but beginning to recover, and will adopt the Phoenician alphabet within a century or two. Carthage is founded by settlers from Tyre by tradition in 814 BC. In the Americas the Olmec centre shifts to La Venta.
