To the , . O , thou hast searched me, and known me. Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off. Thou compassest my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. For there is not a word in my , but, lo, O , thou knowest it altogether. Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. Whither shall I go from thy ? or whither shall I flee from thy ? If I ascend up into , thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the of the morning, and in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy shall hold me. If I say, Surely shall cover me; even the night shall be about me. Yea, hideth not from thee; but the night shineth as the day: and are both alike to thee. For thou hast my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother’s . I will thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that knoweth right well. My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. How precious also are thy unto me, O ! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee. Surely thou wilt , O : depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine take thy name in . Do not I hate them, O , that hate thee? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee? I hate them with perfect hatred: I count them mine . Search me, O , and know : try me, and know my : And see if there be any way in me, and lead me in .

The world at this moment · The united kingdom, 1050 BC to 931 BC

Saul, David, and Solomon. A rare window when both Egypt and Mesopotamia are weak, which is how a small kingdom in the corridor between them could briefly become a regional power.

The power vacuum
This is the whole political explanation for the united kingdom. Egypt is fragmented, Assyria is recovering but still local, the Hittites are gone, and nobody is in a position to object to a strong state in the corridor. It lasts about a century, and Israel's golden age fits exactly inside it.
Phoenicia
Tyre under Hiram is the commercial power of the coast, and supplies the cedar, the craftsmen, and the shipping for Solomon's building programme. The alliance is trade, not charity: Israel had grain and a land route, Tyre had timber and ships.
Egypt
Weak enough that a pharaoh gives a daughter in marriage to an Israelite king, which is the opposite of Egyptian practice in stronger centuries. Late in the era it recovers under a new house, and Shishak will invade within five years of Solomon's death.
Further afield
Greece is still in its dark age but beginning to recover, and will adopt the Phoenician alphabet within a century or two. Carthage is founded by settlers from Tyre by tradition in 814 BC. In the Americas the Olmec centre shifts to La Venta.
