To the , A Psalm and Song of . waiteth for thee, O , in : and unto thee shall the be performed. O thou that hearest , unto thee shall come. prevail against me: as for our , thou shalt purge them away. is the man whom thou choosest, and causest to approach unto thee, that he may in thy courts: we shall be satisfied with the goodness of thy house, even of thy temple. By terrible things in wilt thou answer us, O of our ; who art the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea: Which by his strength setteth the mountains; being girded with : Which stilleth the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people. They also that in the uttermost parts are afraid at thy tokens: thou makest the outgoings of the morning and evening to rejoice. Thou visitest the earth, and waterest it: thou greatly enrichest it with the river of , which is full of water: thou preparest them corn, when thou hast so provided for it. Thou waterest the ridges thereof abundantly: thou settlest the furrows thereof: thou makest it soft with : thou blessest the springing thereof. Thou crownest the year with thy goodness; and thy drop fatness. They drop upon the pastures of : and the little hills rejoice on every side. The pastures are clothed with flocks; the valleys also are covered over with corn; they shout for joy, they also sing.

Saul, David, and Solomon. A rare window when both Egypt and Mesopotamia are weak, which is how a small kingdom in the corridor between them could briefly become a regional power.
- The power vacuum
- This is the whole political explanation for the united kingdom. Egypt is fragmented, Assyria is recovering but still local, the Hittites are gone, and nobody is in a position to object to a strong state in the corridor. It lasts about a century, and Israel's golden age fits exactly inside it.
- Phoenicia
- Tyre under Hiram is the commercial power of the coast, and supplies the cedar, the craftsmen, and the shipping for Solomon's building programme. The alliance is trade, not charity: Israel had grain and a land route, Tyre had timber and ships.
- Egypt
- Weak enough that a pharaoh gives a daughter in marriage to an Israelite king, which is the opposite of Egyptian practice in stronger centuries. Late in the era it recovers under a new house, and Shishak will invade within five years of Solomon's death.
- Further afield
- Greece is still in its dark age but beginning to recover, and will adopt the Phoenician alphabet within a century or two. Carthage is founded by settlers from Tyre by tradition in 814 BC. In the Americas the Olmec centre shifts to La Venta.
