And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his said unto him, , teach us to , as also taught his . And he said unto them, When ye , say, which art in , Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in , so in earth. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our ; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into ; but us from evil. And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; 6For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a , will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a ? Or if he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your give to them that ask him? And he was casting out a devil, and it was dumb. And it came to pass, when the devil was gone out, the dumb spake; and the people wondered. But some of them said, He casteth out devils through the chief of the devils. And others, tempting him, sought of him a sign from . But he, knowing their , said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against a house falleth. If also be divided against himself, how shall stand? because ye say that I cast out devils through . And if I by cast out devils, by whom do your sons cast them out? therefore shall they be your judges. But if I with the finger of cast out devils, no doubt of is come upon you. When a strong man armed keepeth his palace, his goods are in peace: But when a stronger than he shall come upon him, and overcome him, he taketh from him all his armour wherein he trusted, and divideth his spoils. He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth. When the is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he saith, I will return unto my house whence I came out. And when he cometh, he findeth it swept and garnished. Then goeth he, and taketh to him seven other spirits more than himself; and they enter in, and there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said unto him, is the that thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. But he said, Yea rather, are they that hear the word of , and keep it. And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of the . For as was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also be to this generation. The queen of the south shall rise up in the with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the of ; and, behold, a greater than is here. Then answered one of the , and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also. And he said, Woe unto you also, ye ! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers. Woe unto you! for ye build the sepulchres of , and your fathers killed them. Truly ye bear that ye allow the deeds of your fathers: for they indeed killed them, and ye build their sepulchres. Therefore also said the of , I will send them and , and some of them they shall and persecute: That of all , which was shed from the foundation of the world, may be required of this generation; From of unto of , which between the and : verily I say unto you, It shall be required of this generation. Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
