After these things appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before into every city and place, whither he himself would come. Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: ye therefore of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest. Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor : and salute no man by . And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it: if not, it shall turn to you again. And in the same house , eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you: And heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, of is come nigh unto you. But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same, and say, Even the very of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you: notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that of is come nigh unto you. But I say unto you, that it shall be more tolerable in that day for , than for that city. Woe unto thee, ! woe unto thee, ! for if the mighty works had been done in and , which have been done in you, they had a great while ago , sitting in . But it shall be more tolerable for and at the , than for you. And thou, , which art exalted to , shalt be thrust down to hell. He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. But a certain , as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had on him, And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and , and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two , and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will thee. Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said unto him, Go, and do thou likewise. Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named received him into her house. And she had a sister called , which also sat at ’ feet, and heard his word. But was cumbered about much , and came to him, and said, , dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to alone? bid her therefore that she help me. And answered and said unto her, , , thou art careful and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
