After this there was a feast of the ; and went up to . Now there is at by the sheep market a pool, which is called in the , having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk, of blind, halt, withered, for the moving of the water. 4For went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had. And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. When saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the . The therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the : it is not lawful for thee to carry thy bed. He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk. Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk? And he that was healed wist not who it was: for had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place. Afterward findeth him in , and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee. The man departed, and told the that it was , which had made him whole. And therefore did the persecute , and sought to him, because he had done these things on the . But answered them, worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the , but said also that was his , making himself equal with . Then answered and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as raiseth up , and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For judgeth no man, but hath committed all unto the Son: That all men should the Son, even as they . He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not which hath sent him. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath , and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from unto life. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when shall hear the voice of the Son of : and they that hear shall live. For as hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him to execute also, because he is . Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the of life; and they that have done evil, unto the of damnation. I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge: and my is ; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of which hath sent me. If I bear of myself, my is not true. There is another that beareth of me; and I know that the which he witnesseth of me is true. Ye sent unto , and he unto the truth. But I receive not from man: but these things I say, that ye might be . He was a burning and a shining : and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his . But I have greater than that of : for the works which hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear of me, that hath sent me. And himself, which hath sent me, hath borne of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. And ye have not his word abiding in you: for whom he hath sent, him ye not. Search ; for in them ye think ye have : and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. I receive not from men. But I know you, that ye have not the love of in you. I am come in ’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. How can ye , which receive one of another, and seek not the that cometh from only? Do not think that I will accuse you to : there is one that accuseth you, even , in whom ye . For had ye , ye would have me: for he wrote of me. But if ye not his writings, how shall ye my words?

The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.

Rome
The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
Judea
Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
The wider world
Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
Further afield
The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
