Now before the feast of , when knew that his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto , having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end. And supper being ended, the devil having now put into of , ’s son, to betray him; knowing that had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from , and went to ; He riseth from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel, and girded himself. After that he poureth water into a bason, and began to wash ’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded. Then cometh he to : and saith unto him, , dost thou wash my feet? answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter. saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me. saith unto him, , not my feet only, but also my hands and my head. saith to him, He that is washed needeth not to wash his feet, but is clean every whit: and ye are clean, but not all. For he knew who should betray him; therefore said he, Ye are not all clean. So after he had washed their feet, and had taken his garments, and was set down again, he said unto them, Know ye what I have done to you? Ye call me Master and : and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you. Verily, verily, I say unto you, The servant is not greater than his ; neither he that is sent greater than he that sent him. If ye know these things, happy are ye if ye do them. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. Now I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may that I am he. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me. When had thus said, he was troubled in , and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. Then looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on ’ one of his , whom loved. therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. He then lying on ’ breast saith unto him, , who is it? answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to , the son of . And after the sop entered into him. Then said unto him, That thou doest, do quickly. 28Now no man knew for what intent he spake this unto him. For some of them thought, because had the bag, that had said unto him, Buy those things that we have need of against the feast; or, that he should give something to . He then having received the sop went immediately out: and it was night. Therefore, when he was gone out, said, Now is glorified, and is glorified in him. If be glorified in him, shall also him in himself, and shall straightway him. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. Ye shall seek me: and as I said unto the , Whither I go, ye cannot come; so now I say to you. A new I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my , if ye have love one to another. said unto him, , whither goest thou? answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. said unto him, , why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
