Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with in them that heard it. For we which have do enter into rest, as he said, As I have in my , if they shall enter into : although the works were finished from the foundation of the world. For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this , And did rest the seventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they shall enter into . Seeing therefore it remaineth that some must enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief: Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in , To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your . For if had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of . For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as did from his. Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief. For the word of is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged , piercing even to the dividing asunder of and , and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the and intents of . The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100 ›
Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
