Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of , let us lay aside every weight, and the which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with the race that is set before us, Looking unto the author and finisher of our ; who for the joy that was set before him , despising the , and is set down at of of . For consider him that such contradiction of against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your . Ye have not yet resisted unto , striving against . And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of , nor faint when thou art rebuked of him: For whom loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth. If ye chastening, dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom chasteneth not? But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons. Furthermore we have had fathers of our which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto of spirits, and live? For they verily for days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his . Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of ; but let it rather be healed. Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
