Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a ; and the younger men as brethren; The elder women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity. that are indeed. But if any have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before . Now she that is a indeed, and desolate, trusteth in , and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day. But she that liveth in pleasure is while she liveth. And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless. But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the , and is worse than an infidel. Let not a be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man, Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed ’ feet, if she have relieved , if she have diligently followed every good work. But the younger refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry; Having damnation, because they have cast off their first . And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not. I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully. For some are already turned aside after . If any man or woman that believeth have , let them relieve them, and let not be charged; that it may relieve them that are indeed. Let the that rule well be counted worthy of double , especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three . Them that rebuke before all, that others also may fear. I charge thee before , and , and the elect , that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. Lay hands suddenly on no man, neither be partaker of other men’s : keep thyself pure. Drink no longer water, but use a little for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities. Some men’s are open beforehand, going before to ; and some men they follow after. Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and they that are otherwise cannot be hid.

The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.

Rome
The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
Judea
Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
The wider world
Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
Further afield
The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
