Finally, my brethren, rejoice in . To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not grievous, but for you it is safe. Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision. For we are the , which in , and rejoice in Christ , and have no confidence in . Though I might also have confidence in . If any other man thinketh that he hath whereof he might in , I more: the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of , an of the ; as touching , a ; Concerning , persecuting ; touching the which is in , blameless. But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ my : for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, And be found in him, not having mine own , which is of , but that which is through the of Christ, the which is of by : That I may know him, and the of his , and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his ; If by any means I might attain unto the of . Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ . Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of in Christ . Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, shall even this unto you. Nevertheless, whereto we have already attained, let us walk by the same rule, let us the same thing. Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the of of Christ: Whose end is , whose is their belly, and whose is in their , who earthly things.) For our conversation is in ; from whence also we look for the , : Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his body, according to the working whereby he is able even to all things unto himself.

The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100 ›
Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
