When he was come down from the mountain, followed him. And, behold, there came a and him, saying, , if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. And saith unto him, See thou tell no man; but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer the gift that commanded, for a unto them. When heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great , no, not in Israel. But the children of shall be cast out into outer : there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. And said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast , so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour. And when was come into ’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick: That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the , saying, Himself took our infirmities, and our sicknesses. Now when saw about him, he gave to depart unto the other side. And a certain came, and said unto him, Master, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And saith unto him, The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air have nests; but hath not where to lay his head. And another of his said unto him, , suffer me first to go and bury . But said unto him, Follow me; and let bury their . And when he was entered into a ship, his followed him. And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered with the waves: but he was asleep. And his came to him, and awoke him, saying, , us: we . And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little ? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea him! And when he was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met him two with devils, coming out of the , exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. And, behold, they cried out, saying, What have we to do with thee, , thou Son of ? art thou come hither to torment us before the time? And there was a good way off from them an herd of many swine feeding. So the devils besought him, saying, If thou cast us out, suffer us to go away into the herd of swine. And he said unto them, Go. And when they were come out, they went into the herd of swine: and, behold, the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea, and in the waters. And they that kept them fled, and went their ways into the city, and told every thing, and what was befallen to the of the devils. And, behold, the whole city came out to meet : and when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coasts.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
