And it came to pass, that when had finished these sayings, he departed from , and came into the coasts of beyond Jordan; And followed him; and he healed them there. The also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one ? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one . What therefore hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, because of the hardness of your suffered you to your wives: but it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth : and whoso marrieth her which is doth . His say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, they to whom it is given. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or , or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall . Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
