And it came to pass, that when had finished these sayings, he departed from , and came into the coasts of beyond Jordan; And followed him; and he healed them there. The also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one ? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one . What therefore hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, because of the hardness of your suffered you to your wives: but it was not so. And I say unto you, Whosoever shall his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth : and whoso marrieth her which is doth . His say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry. But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, they to whom it is given. For there are some , which were so born from their mother’s : and there are some , which were made of men: and there be , which have made themselves for of ’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it. Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and : and rebuked them. But said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is of . And he on them, and departed thence. And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have ? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, : but if thou wilt enter into life, keep . He saith unto him, Which? said, Thou shalt do no , Thou shalt not , Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false , thy and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet? said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to , and thou shalt have : and come and follow me. But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions. Then said unto his , Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into of . And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into of . When his heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be ? But beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with all things are possible. Then answered and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore? And said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when shall sit in of his , ye also shall sit upon twelve , judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or , or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall . But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

The world at this moment · Under Rome, 63 BC to AD 100

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.

Rome
The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
Judea
Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
The wider world
Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
Further afield
The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
