And they came over unto the other side of the sea, into the country of the Gadarenes. And he besought him much that he would not send them away out of the country. Now there was there nigh unto the mountains a great herd of swine feeding. And all the devils besought him, saying, Send us into the swine, that we may enter into them. And forthwith gave them leave. And the went out, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the sea, (they were about two thousand;) and were choked in the sea. And they that fed the swine fled, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done. And they come to , and see him that was with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right : and they were afraid. 16And they that saw it told them how it befell to him that was with the devil, and also concerning the swine. And they began to him to depart out of their coasts. And when he was come into the ship, he that had been with the devil him that he might be with him. Howbeit suffered him not, but saith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things hath done for thee, and hath had on thee. And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things had done for him: and all men did marvel. And when was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea. And, behold, there cometh one of the of the , by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, And besought him greatly, saying, My little daughter lieth at the point of : I thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that she may be healed; and she shall live. And went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. And a certain woman, which had an issue of twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of , came in the press behind, and touched his garment. 28For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole. And straightway the fountain of her was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of that plague. And , immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes? And his said unto him, Thou seest thronging thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 32And he looked round about to see her that had done this thing. But the woman fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. And he said unto her, Daughter, thy hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague. While he yet spake, there came from the ruler of the ’s house certain which said, Thy daughter is : why troublest thou the Master any further? As soon as heard the word that was spoken, he saith unto the ruler of the , Be not afraid, only . And he suffered no man to follow him, , and , and the brother of . And he cometh to the house of the ruler of the , and seeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly. And when he was come in, he saith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the damsel is not , but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying. And he took the damsel by the hand, and said unto her, Talitha cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damsel, I say unto thee, arise. And straightway the damsel arose, and walked; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great astonishment. And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
