My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye not. And if any man , we have an advocate with , : And he is the propitiation for our : and not for ours only, but also for the of the whole world. And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his . He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his , is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. Brethren, I write no new unto you, but an old which ye had . The old is the word which ye have heard . Again, a new I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because is past, and the true now shineth. He that saith he is in , and hateth his brother, is even until now. He that loveth his brother abideth in , and there is none occasion of stumbling in him. But he that hateth his brother is , and walketh , and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that hath blinded his eyes. I write unto you, little children, because your are forgiven you for his name’s sake. I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is . I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known . I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is . I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of abideth in you, and ye have overcome one. Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of is not in him. For all that is in the world, the of , and the of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of , but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the thereof: but he that doeth the will of abideth for ever. Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But ye have an unction from the One, and ye know all things. I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denieth that is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth and the Son. Whosoever denieth the Son, the same hath not : [but] he that acknowledgeth the Son hath also. Let that therefore in you, which ye have heard . If that which ye have heard shall in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in . And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even . These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall in him. And now, little children, in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be before him at his coming. If ye know that he is , ye know that every one that doeth is born of him.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.
- Further afield
- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
