Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were , unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by of calleth : and that no man can say that is , but by the Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same . And there are differences of administrations, but the same . And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the word of ; to another the word of knowledge by the same ; To another by the same ; to another the gifts of healing by the same ; To another the working of miracles; to another ; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of ; to another the of : But all these worketh that one and the selfsame , dividing to every man severally as he will. For as , and hath many members, and all the members of that , being many, are : so also is Christ. For by one are we all into , whether we be or , whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one . For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. 19And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but . And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those , which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those , which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant ; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant to that part which lacked: That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the , and members in particular. And hath set some in , first , secondarily , thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of . Are all ? are all ? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with ? do all ? But earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Judea as a client kingdom and then a province. Roads, garrisons, taxes, crucifixion, and a common Greek language that let a message travel the empire faster than any before it.
- Rome
- The republic tears itself apart in civil war and comes out as an empire under Augustus. What follows is two centuries of relative peace across the whole Mediterranean, enforced by legions and paid for by taxes, with safe roads and safe sea lanes. Every one of Paul's journeys depends on that.
- Judea
- Governed first through Herod the Great, a client king of enormous ability and enormous brutality who rebuilds the temple into one of the wonders of the ancient world, then directly by Roman prefects. Crucifixion is the standard penalty for sedition and is used often and publicly.
- The wider world
- Greek is spoken from Spain to Syria, which means a letter written in Corinth can be read in Rome without translation. Jewish communities already exist in most major cities, which is where the first Christian preaching lands. Mystery religions, imperial cult, and philosophy all compete in the same marketplace.

- The Han dynasty rules China and trades silk westward along routes that touch the Roman world at second hand. In Britain the Roman conquest begins within a decade of the crucifixion.
